Mesh repair and optimisation

A model that a slicer refuses, an engine renders inside out, or a repair tool declares broken is rarely broken in the way the error message says. This section is about reading the actual defect first: holes against non-manifold edges against duplicated vertices against a scale that makes every threshold meaningless. Only then does the choice of fix, and what that fix costs, become a decision rather than a guess.

What this covers

Diagnosing and repairing mesh defects, and reducing mesh complexity without breaking it: watertightness, non-manifold geometry, vertex welding, degenerate faces, decimation and retopology. It does not cover choosing a file format, which is its own section, or 3D printer hardware and print settings, which this site does not write about.
